Princess Margaret is sent to Portugal to marry the decrepit King on the orders of her brother, who before she left ‘promised’ her that when the old king did die she would be permitted to marry any man of her choosing. Soon after the wedding night the King is dead and Margret fleas with Charles Brandon and marries him in secret. Meanwhile Henry is falling deeply in love with Anne Boleyn, and with the growing tension between himself and Catherine he implores Wolsey to find him a way to divorce Catherine and take a new Queen.
